Diagnosis Of Melanoma
It is important that patients do not shave off or attempt to destroy any suspicious areas on the skin. Rather, if a mole or pigmented skin area looks suspicious, your doctor may want to perform a biopsy. This involves removing the discolored skin patch and some of the surrounding tissue and examining it in a laboratory. If the cells are cancerous, the cancer will be staged (see Melanoma Stages).
Based upon the stage of melanoma and a patient's overall condition, appropriate treatment options are then determined. For more information, see Melanoma Treatment and What Do I Need To Know About PROLEUKIN (aldesleukin) for injection Therapy?
