How is PROLEUKIN Therapy Administered?
Clinical studies involving patients with either metastatic melanoma or metastatic kidney cancer have evaluated PROLEUKIN (aldesleukin) for injection therapy administered by intravenous (IV) infusion. Patients are hospitalized during treatment but can go home during the rest period.
Your doctor may be able to determine whether the tumors have shrunk within 2 months after patients receive their first course of PROLEUKIN therapy, although sometimes results have been seen as early as 1 month after treatment. Metastatic melanoma and metastatic kidney cancer patients whose tumors shrink receive an average of 2 treatment courses, depending upon the success of the first course and the patient's state of health.
PROLEUKIN therapy may be stopped at any time if treatment is not tolerated. Side effects from PROLEUKIN therapy are not managed by reducing the amount of drug given. Instead, treatment is halted temporarily until the side effects subside; then, depending on clinical condition, therapy can be resumed.
