John Speaks Up About Proleukin®

Cancer Free Since 2004a

I'm a retired deputy marshall for San Diego County. My wife, Mary, and I love to travel. I've seen a lot of places in my life, including Tahiti, Africa, New Zealand, and most of Mexico and Canada. We have a camping RV and have been to 46 states. We even own a little beach retreat in Mexico we like to visit with family and friends. It's a nice getaway.

"...a dermatologist had been ... removing the little skin cancers when they appeared."

There was a time when traveling wasn't so easy. In 1995, a dermatologist had been following me for basal cell cancer, removing the little skin cancers when they appeared. Not a big deal. But on one visit he noticed an unusual mole on my back. He did a biopsy and found out it was melanoma. A surgeon removed it and I was cancer free.

"...the cancer returned in the form of a lump under my left armpit."

But four and a half years later, the cancer returned in the form of a lump under my left armpit. It turns out the cancer had also metastasized to my right lung. I had two surgeries: one to remove the lump and surrounding lymph glands and the second to remove a piece of my right lung. Two years later, I found a lump on my rib cage. My new oncologist discovered tumors in both lungs and referred me to a specialist who started me on chemo and biotherapy in November 2002, but these proved to be ineffective. My doctor then changed my treatment to high-dose Proleukin, which involved several stays in intensive care.

"And the good news was that the tumors began shrinking quickly."

I got 4 cycles of Proleukin treatment. With each cycle I had a lot of serious side effects that my doctor had warned me about. I had really bad itching and a rash during my treatment. My nausea was so bad from the treatment that I would stop eating for 3 days at a time. But the side effects typically went away once I got home after the five days of treatment. And the good news was that the tumors began shrinking quickly. My wife was in the hospital with me the whole time, and my family and friends gave me terrific support.

"I'm able to do everything now that I was able to do before treatment..."

I'm now in remission and am doing wonderfully. I'm able to do everything now that I was able to do before treatment, including walking 3 miles a day as I have for years. My wife and I even took a 17-day trip to Italy... the scenery in the Tuscan Hills is just gorgeous. For our next trips, we're thinking about getting those last 4 states in and possibly Peru or the Galapagos Islands. Wherever life takes us.

How to discuss Proleukin with your doctor

aThe experience of these patients isn't representative of overall results with Proleukin.

In Proleukin clinical studies, about 1 in 17 patients with metastatic melanoma had no evidence of disease ranging from 3 months to 10+ years.
